Social Movement Campaign for one year paid maternity & paternity leave in Malta and family-friendly measures
-
There has been quite a bit of discussion about declining birth rates in Malta, and we’ve received valuable feedback from our community. As a social movement, this topic is very important to us, and we feel it's crucial to join the conversation and share some compelling facts and lived experiences.
Research shows that longer paid parental leave and family-friendly measures boost birth rates and enhance family well-being. According to a study by the OECD, countries with comprehensive parental leave policies see higher birth rates and improved child development outcomes. 📈
Investing in families means investing in a brighter future for all. Let’s champion policies that empower parents and nurture the next generation! 💪

As we advocate for one year of paid maternity and paternity leave in Malta, it’s essential to highlight how this policy can significantly impact breastfeeding rates. Research shows that extended parental leave encourages breastfeeding, leading to numerous health benefits for both mothers and children.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), breastfeeding reduces the risk of childhood illnesses, such as respiratory infections and diarrhea, and is linked to lower rates of breast cancer in mothers.
A study published in the journal Pediatrics found that mothers who had access to longer maternity leave were more likely to initiate and continue breastfeeding for the recommended six months and beyond. This not only supports infant health but also strengthens the mother-child bond.
By investing in one year of paid parental leave, we can promote healthier families and communities! Let’s make this change for the well-being of our future generations.
Stay tuned for more updates as we push for family-friendly policies in Malta!

The physical and mental demands of pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period can be overwhelming. Research indicates that recovery from childbirth can take up to a year, as women navigate the physical healing from delivery and the emotional adjustments of new motherhood. This journey is often more challenging today, as many women lack the extended family and community support that was common in the past.
Motherhood now requires navigating numerous demands—balancing work, household responsibilities, and the care of a newborn—often without the support systems that once existed. This shift makes it essential for women to have adequate time to transition into parenthood in a healthy way. One year of paid maternity leave is vital, allowing mothers the space to recover physically and emotionally.
Moreover, we must advocate for family-friendly measures that support both parents. Some examples include:
-Flexible work hours for both mothers & fathers.
-Remote work options.
-On-site childcare facilities in workplaces.
-Paternity leave that encourages shared responsibilities.#StrongerMothersStrongerEconomy#OneYearForFamiliesInMalta#SupportNewParents#FamilyFriendlyPolicies#TransitionToParenthood#InvestInFamilies
